Abandon Mute

Abandon Mute are a 4-piece alternative rock band swimming strongly against the current mainstream. Formed in London but with a spiritual home in Bristol, they have spent the past three years creating music that swerves elegantly from delicate and soul-baring to the downright nastiest and most aggressive 21st century space-rock.

Bristol songwriter Alex Newick (vocals, piano, guitar) met Portuguese bass player Tiago Dias in 2009 at a London music college, and they were quickly joined by virtuoso drummer Leonard Berisha, from Croatia. After some initial gigs and the recording of a demo EP they met Kent-born guitarist/producer Jon Wright. As a 4-piece they began to develop a more original sound, stitching together extremes of dynamics and a musically progressive attitude with Newick’s engaging lyrics and gift for catchy melodies.

Recording of their debut album was due to begin in January 2011, but a visa problem and subsequent run in with the UK Border Agency temporarily prevented Berisha from returning to the UK after a Christmas break. Several months of hiatus followed, the band flying to Croatia that May to record the drum parts. Back in the UK the remainder of the album would be recorded by Newick, Wright and Dias, mainly in Wright’s Brighton home studio.

Initially a 14-track album, the band reduced Curious Times to 10 tracks as they realised a clear thematic and sonic break developing between the newer songs and the old. The result is a coherent and compelling album, saturated by scenes of urban desolation, social isolation and the weight of a terminally breaking relationship.

On sale now on iTunes, Amazon and most other digital retailers, Curious Times is also available in CD format, with a 12-page booklet featuring lyrics and original artwork, and each copy is individually hand-numbered by the band. Currently the CD is only on sale directly through the band at live dates, but it should shortly be available to order online and is a great opportunity to own a unique piece of art.

The band are currently booking live dates and gigging around the UK.
